I am very glad to be teaching first grade. This is my twenty-third year of teaching.  All twenty three years have been at Moneta Elementary School.  I have taught sixteen years in second grade, two years in fourth/fifth grade and five years in first grade.

Homework: Make sure your child is reading according to their Read and Response page and studying their word families nightly.

 We use REMIND! in class. This is great way to communicate with  me directly as well as keep up with class announcements.

Activities to do during the Summer

Week of April 6th-10th


Monday April 6th:

Reading: Explore a cereal or other food box and gather the following information:

1.   Name of food

2.   Name of company who made the food

3.   Ingredients in the food

Record your information by drawing a picture of the food box, writing the title of the food, who made the food, then list one or more ingredients in the food.

Writing: Write about how you felt when you heard that school was closed for the rest of the year.  Use detailed sentences and proofread your work (check for errors/mistakes). Share this with someone at home.

Math:  MEASURING ITEMS

Find 4 objects in your house that can fit in your hand.

Find a bunch of pennies.

Take the first object you picked and lay it on the floor.  Put the pennies in a line under the object you picked, making sure each penny touches the other one next to it.  How many pennies did it take to go across the object on the floor?

Do the same thing with the other objects.

Science: Take a look around your kitchen and find 5 edible plants, then draw a picture and write the names of the edible plants on a piece of paper.(example:  corn)

Tuesday April 7th:


Reading

Search a magazine for the following information: 

Favorite Animal

Record the following information by cutting out the picture or by drawing the picture, then writing a response:

Use 2 or more adjectives and nouns to describe the animal (example: brown fur)

Write a sentence to tell where the animal is.

Write a sentence to tell what the animal is doing.

Write a sentence to tell why you like the animal

Writing: Make a grocery list of items you will need from the store to last you for at least one week.  I hope you have at least 10 items on the list.

Math:  LONGER AND SHORTER

Find 2 objects that are different lengths.

Find a bunch of pennies.

Put the objects on the floor next to each other.

Use your pennies (like you did on Monday) to measure the objects.

How many pennies did it take to go across each object?

Which is longer?

Which is shorter?

Science: Take a walk outside with your parents and find 5 deciduous trees (trees that lose their leaves) and draw a picture of each one.  Write the names of them if you know their names. (example: oak tree)

Which is taller and which is shorter, your dresser or a kitchen cabinet?

Use your hands to measure from top to bottom. 

How many hands long was your dresser?

How many hands long was the kitchen cabinet?

Which one was taller?

Which one was shorter?  

Science: Take a walk outside with your parents and see if you can find 2 or more evergreen trees (trees that stay green all year).  Draw a picture of them if you can find them. Label them if you know their names. (example: cedar tree)

Thursday April 9th:


Reading

Set them next to each other to check your answer.

Science: Look through a magazine and see if you can find 2 deciduous trees and 2 evergreen trees.  Cut them out and glue them under a sort: Evergreen

Friday April 10th:


Reading:  

Interview someone in your family:  

Ask the following questions and record your answers on a piece of paper.

What’s your full name?

How old are you?

When is your birthday?

What is your favorite color?

Then ask a question of your choice.

Writing: Make a Venn Diagram (draw 2 large circles).  On one side put Learning at Home and on the side put Learning at School.  In the middle, you will list things that apply to both. Did you forget how to create a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast?  Not a problem...YouTube to the rescue! Watch this video explaining how it works YouTube (Venn Diagram).  Can you create a different Venn Diagram?  Compare yourself to your sibling or parent.  The possibilities are endless!

Math: FAMILY FEET:

Get some paper and trace one foot from each person in your house

Cut the traced feet out.

Lay them down on the floor from longest to shortest.

Then use your pennies to measure each foot.

How many pennies long was each foot?

Science: Take a walk outside with your parents and look for new buds and blossoms on plants.  Count how many plants you found with new buds or blossoms.

Monday April 20th:

Reading:This week’s focus is FICTION STORIES - stories that are not true.

Characters and Setting

Pick a fiction story to read and after reading your story, write down on a piece of paper who the characters were in the story.  Then let your parents check your answer.

Next write down the setting from the story (where the story takes place).  Sometimes the setting changes so you can have more than one answer. Let your parents check your answer.

Writing: Write about what you did last week over Spring Break.  See if you can write five good sentences. Check for capital letters and punctuation marks.

Manmade resources are things like plastic, paper,  sheet metal, rubber and brass.   Man made objects are things like tables, chairs, pencils, toys and books.

Take a walk inside your house with your parents and look for man-made resources and objects like the ones listed above.  Take a piece of paper and pencil with you and write down 4, 5 or more man-made resources and objects you find.

Science: Focus Taking care of our Air, Water and Land

We need clean air, water and land.  Do not pollute!

Today you will draw a picture showing  clean air, water and land.

Draw a pretty picture of things you would see on land, like trees, flowers, sand-box, houses or whatever you want.  Next add a water body like a pond, river, creek, lake or ocean. Then add something nice to the fresh air like the sunshine, soaring birds, butterflies or anything else you want.  Finally, draw some people and animals in your picture and make sure they are being friendly to the earth.

Hang your picture on the refrigerator if you want so everyone can see it!

Science: Focus is Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Reduce means to use a smaller or lesser amount of something.  For example, don’t use globs of glue and turn off water when you are not using it.  How do you reduce? Tell your parents 3, 4 or more ways.

Reuse means to use something again. For example, we reused paper from our scrapbox at school.  You reuse your crayons over and over. A sponge or a dishrag is used over and over. How do you reuse?  Tell your parents 3, 4 or more ways.

Recycle means to take waste material and turn it into new material.

You remember our recycle bin at school. How can you recycle?  Tell your parents 3, 4 or more ways.

Prior Knowledge and Background Knowledge 

Pick a nonfiction story.  What do you already know about the topic?  Tell your parents 2-3 facts that you already know.  Then read the story.  Confirm your prior knowledge by checking to see if what you thought you knew was written in the story.

Now get a piece of paper and write about something new that you learned about the topic.  

Let your parents check your work.

UnderstandingVolume:

Find a container in your house like a cup or a bowl.  Then find a scoop of some sort like a spoon or small jar lid.  Get some dry rice, beans or cereal and use your scoop to scoop up food and put it into your container.  Count how many times you used the scoop to fill the container. Have your parents watch you.

Do it again with a different container and a different scoop.  This time make a guess as to how many scoops it will take to fill the container.  Then start scooping!  Let your parents watch. Check to see how close your guess was.  

Have fun doing this over and over.

Math: More, Less, Equivalent

Today you will pour one container into the other.

Have your parents find  2 different containers and give them to you. Get some dry rice, beans or cereal and fill up one of the containers with the food.  Then pour the food from that container into the other container.   Have your parents watch you.

What happened? Did you notice that the first container held more, less or was equivalent in volume? Explain your answer to your parents.

Activity #2 Your parents are consumers when they buy a service.  If an auto mechanic fixes your parents’ car, then that means your parents bought a service.  Today ask your parents what services they have purchased recently.  See if they can tell you 3, 4 or more services.

Now cut and glue your pictures onto the right pieces of papers.
